1. Framed works
1/1 1 oil of landscape signed "R J Lloyd 1978" in gilded frame with framer's label on reverse (Gordon Williams, Bow).
1/2 1 Large, framed, print of Ram inscribed "for Carol Xmas '81 From Reg".
1/3 1 framed watercolour landscape showing a pebble ridge, possibly Westward Ho!. Signed "R.J. Lloyd 1989".
1/4 1 framed watercolour of a fantail Dove signed "R.J. Lloyd 1986". Inscribed on back of the frame "Fantails cat and cuckoo"; "Burton (7) Fantails"; "For Ted and Carol with love from Reg. Christmas 1988". With framer's label (Minerva Gallery).
1/5 4 line and watercolour drawings relating to the book The Cat and the Cuckoo, Sunstone Press, 1987. Originally framed as two pairs which were gifts to Ted and Carol Hughes for Christmas. Each pair retained on its original inscribed board.

1/6 1 engraving (woodcut) signed "R.J. Lloyd 1983" "Proof". On bottom of sheet inscribed "A Wonky Woodpecker for Ted. All the best Reg. June 1st 83." Originally framed by Peter Manson of C Samuels & Sons, Ltd, Exeter. De-framed, lightly cleaned with soft brush and placed in acid-free enclosure.
1/7 1 mounted engraving (woodcut) signed "R.J. Lloyd 83". On bottom of sheet inscribed "For Ted 17th Aug 83 from Reg." Originally framed by Peter Manson of C Samuels & Sons, Ltd, Exeter.

2. Three Portfolios relating to the publication What is the Truth (Faber and Faber, 1984); poems by Ted Hughes and illustrations by R J Lloyd
2/1 Portfolio containing 9 loose prints of bats: 2 items hand-coloured on card, 7 prints on paper, includes image selected for p 43. Two prints are signed by R J Lloyd and dedicated to Ted Hughes.
2/2 Portfolio containing 6 loose prints: two items hand coloured on card - bats; 4 items on paper - one hand coloured, print of a carp; one print of a fly; one print of a hen; one print of a cockerel.
2/3 Portfolio containing 36 sheets. Items include illustrations and various proposed layouts for the book including suggestions for the cover illustration. Some sheets include the printer's layout marks. Includes designs for title page with one copy sheet marked "Title" and "A Farmyard Fable etc. Illustrations by RJL. Colour". Also includes a hand-coloured sheet "The Mad Lamb. For Ted from Reg Oct 7th 83" Illustrated on p37 if the book. In addition four hand-coloured sheets, three stamped on reverse "R J LLOYD/65 HIGH STREET/BIDEFORD, DEVON" depicting mice, insects and birds, plus one hand-coloured card of a bat inscribed "For Ted From Reg. 6th April 82".

3. Loose items
3/1 1 handmade Christmas greeting on rectangular marbled paper depicting a shipwreck, inscribed "For Ted Xmas 83 Love Reg".
3/2 1 handmade Christmas card with two images. Inside of card includes image of the snail (included in the book The Cat and the Cuckoo Sunstone Press, 1987) inscribed: "The Snail for all his shellers was a cold. 'Old North Devon Saying'. Also inscribed "Happy Christmas 1985 Reg"
3/3 1 handmade Christmas card containing three coloured images, one coloured drawing sketched directly onto the card, signed "R.J. Lloyd 1982" and two hand-coloured prints(?) of sheep stuck onto the card, both signed "R.J. Lloyd 1982.
3/4 1 Faber and Faber bookmark relating to the book What is the Truth, reverse with illustration drawn and coloured by R J Lloyd and inscription: "The Sheep Is a Mobile Heaven T.H. 'Personalised' for Carol love Reg" signed and dated "R.J.L. 1984".
3/5 1 cut-out print of a robin (very small) illustrated on the dedication page of What is the Truth.
3/6 1 "Change of Address" postcard with text "Happy Birthday Carol 83" within an ink drawing of a Ram, initialled "R.J.L."
3/7 1 printed advertising flyer for the publication The Cat and the Cuckoo (limited edition, Sunstone Press, 1987)

4. Envelope of items relating to Artwork for What is the Truth (Faber and Faber, 1984)
4/1 1 Sheet of paper inscribed "Is this the sort of thing? Reg. Print would of course be much heavier"
4/2 1 Sheet inscribed in red ink capital letters "NOT FINISHED ART WORK!" and "I think the owl should have a little cap! all the best Reg."
4/3 1 Faber and Faber specimen bookmark for What is the Truth with red border and note on reverse from R J Lloyd dated 20th January 1984 concerning ideas for the book marks, noting that it would be nice to have coloured borders but "I fear it would cost too much". Includes notes that names would not be included in the final design (these were to be for use by "yourself, Mike and Clare [Morpurgo] and Carol."
4/4 1 strip of card with coloured bird and two pasted-on printed magpies, inscribed "which is the biggest"
4/5 8 designs on white card for bookmark
4/6 9 printed bookmarks including names (as item 4/3 above)
4/7 1 original envelope (as below)

Total = 22 items including the envelope in which the items were sent to Ted Hughes. Items removed and placed in acid-free enclosures. Original envelope retained.

5. Published Works
5/1 "Personalised" copy of What is the Truth (Faber and Faber, 1984), dedicated to Carol Hughes. Signed and dated by R.J. Lloyd with dedication "A Capercaillie for Carol". A watercolour of a capercaillie. Book includes a small painting on card attached to the front matter and watercolours added to the black and white prints. Each illustration throughout the book has been signed and dated in pencil by Lloyd.
5/2 R.J. Lloyd. Paintings Drawings and Monotypes. Compiled by L MacMillan (Rotapress, Combe Martin, 1976). Includes hand-written inscription "For Ted and Carol with best wishes Reg June 76."
5/3 Exhibition Catalogue - R.J. Lloyd. A Retrospective Exhibition of Selected Works, with a preface by Ted Hughes and an introduction by Bevis Hillier (Hereford City Museum and Art Gallery in Association with the Burton Art Gallery, Bideford, Devon, 1996). Includes an invitation for an exhibition at The Gallery, Bideford, Devon 20 September - 18 October 2014.

2/2. Watercolour of Ram's head, signed and dated R J Lloyd, 1986. Note on Reverse "Original drawing for page 20 Cat and the Cuckoo pub Sunstone Press 1987." signed also on reverse R J Lloyd. Dedication "For Carol with love from Reg Xmas 1987". Removed from an original frame and lightly cleaned with soft brush.
2/3 Cream folder containing proofs and sketches for "What is the Truth?" plus two engraved proofs dedicated to Ted and Carol Hughes 1996, signed by R J Lloyd. Over 70 sheets in total.
2/4 Cream folder containing loose proofs and sketches including one pike plus 7 unidentified subject matter - possibly ideas for Crow? 8 sheets.
2/5 Proofs on cream paper for "The Cat and the Cuckoo". 7 sheets.
2/6 Loose items - 12 prints relating to paintings of reclining figures in the landscape (c.1976?), plus one coloured print of a church in the landscape. 13 sheets

Admin HistoryReginald James Lloyd was born in Hereford in 1926. At the age of 2 years his family moved to Dawlish in Devon where his childhood years were spent exploring the surrounding countryside. He later moved to Bideford where he lived for the rest of his life. Except for a brief time at Exeter School of Art, he was largely self-taught. For many years Reg was a member of the prestigious Royal Institute of Painters in watercolours. I n addition to his talent as a painter he was an accomplished potter and stained glass craftsman. His work is found in museums and private collections in Uk and Abroad. He was also an avid collector of pottery and the R J Lloyd collection of ceramics is held at the Burton Art Gallery, Bideford.He formed a lasting friendship with Ted Hughes and they collaborated on the children's books 'What is the Truth', an early edition of 'The Mermaid's Purse', 'Earth Dances',and 'The Cat and the Cuckoo'.
