Description | Complete printed Letts Indian and Colonial Rough Diary 1924, Shanghai, (one day to a page). The diary mainly consists of details of leisure activities such as bridge, croquet, cinema and dancing, and weather reports. Hillman illustrated a few entries with pencil sketches.
Contains occasional references to Hillman's work activities, mostly relating to the inspection of the fog lights, attendance at committee meetings, or at court (especially for prosecutions relating to discharge of oil). He was appointed Coast Inspector in July.
Between May and July Hillman notes the arrivals of the French, American and British 'around the world flight' crews. In June the couple also made the acquaintance of Victoria Drummond who was the first female ship's engineer. During September and October Hillman notes the fighting in and around Shanghai which was part of the 'Crisis of 1924-1925'. |
