TitleDiary
DescriptionComplete printed Letts Indian and Colonial Rough Diary 1925, Shanghai, (one day to a page). The diary consists mostly of details of the Hillman's leisure activities such as billiards, tennis, cinema and drawing, and daily weather reports.

Contains little detail about Hillman's working life other than inspection trips around the coast, attendance at meetings and court trials for ships' masters' discharging into the harbour.

Between January and September Hillman made fairly detailed notes on the incidence of violence, rioting and strikes which formed part of the '1924-25 Crisis' in the region directed by China towards the foreign residents. He made particular note of the spread of strikes to seamen. Shanghai was for a period placed under martial law and a state of emergency declared, international forces from Japan, Manila and America were involved.
