| Admin History | Written in 2003-4 and published for the first time in the United Kingdom in 2005, Friendly Fire is structurally simple, told from a single viewpoint (that of a teenage girl) and presents events in chronological order. Gale draws on his memories of a late 70s adolescence using fiction to explore the ambivalent truths behind superficially happy memories. The School in the novel, Tatham's, is based on Gale's own school, Winchester College, and is also featured in Facing the Tank.
Pen and ink illustrations by Aidan Hicks, Gale's husband, are used at the start of each chapter of the published version. |
