TitleThe Red Shoes
Admin HistoryA re-telling of the story made famous by Hans Christian Anderson about a pair of enchanted crimson shoes. This adaptation is a modern folk tale set in a world both strange and familiar, drawing references from both world wars, the suffragettes, Lillie Langtry and music halls. The story centres around a girl who is unable to resist a pair of bright red shoes, despite warnings from adults and the church of the consequences of this. The play began life in Cornwall in 2000 as an outdoor show. The production evolved and was well recieved playing to sell out performances in London later in 2000 before returning to Cornwall for a week long residency in Truro, Cornwall in February of 2001. Paul Hunter, a founder member of Told By An Idiot Theatre Company, joined the cast in 2001.

Emma Rice went on to win Best Director 2002 at the Barclays TMA Awards for this production. The production was also performed in Syria in 2002 and in China.
