| Admin History | Inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez's short story this production presents a tale of visual beauty and magic created in association with Little Angel Theatre and was performed in 2011, 2013 and 2016.
The Little Angel theatre was founded by John Wright and first opened its doors to the public in 1961 with a desire to create and share stories through puppetry with productions that tour both in the UK and internationally.
A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings was developed to mark the Little Angels 50th birthday and bring the Wright family (Wrights wife Lyndie and their children Sarah and Joe) together on a production for the first time in over 20 years. The idea of using the Gabriel Garcia Marquez story came from Sarah and Mike Shepherd (the Director of the production). Along with Lyndie and Joe they spent time playing around with ideas and creating simple puppets to plant the first seeds of how the show would look and the version of the story they would tell. This production has puppets designed and made by Lyndie Wright with initial ideas for the production storyboarded by Joe Wright and Sarah Wright making some of the puppets, directing the puppetry and performing in the production. More than 100 puppets carved from wood and foam were involved in this production.
This is a show for adults and children retelling Garcias short story with the tale of a family in an English Seaside Town and what happens when an angel descends in a storm and lands in their backyard. It is a universal tale questioning belief, greed, how people react to the unknown and how we treat each other in exceptional circumstances. Marquez original story is set in his native Columbia and was written for children.
