Admin HistoryThe origins of the word Golowan come from two words – gool – Cornish for feast, fair or festival – and Jowan – the Cornish for the name John. Golowan means, loosely, the “Feast of St John” The Golowan festival of today began in 1991. It sought to incorporate and revitalise many of the traditions and practices historically recorded in Penzance during midsummer dating back to the 19th century. Kneehigh Theatre became contributors and sponsors of the event with performance of their productions often featuring the programme of events for the day.
