TitleThe Legend of Jan Tregeagle (Tregeagle) [1]
DescriptionRecords comprise of performance photographs.
Admin HistoryThis first production about Jan Tregeagle the wicked steward of Trevorder was developed for junior school children as part of a Theatre In Education (T.I.E) programme. Mike Shepherd was fascinated by the legend of Jan Tregeagle, particularly Tregeagle's incarceration and treatment of Ann Jeffries. Shepherd was intrigued by how tales of Jeffries (a real woman) and Tregeagle (a real Cornish magistrate) were shaped by superstition, fear and embellished and inflated by the traditions of legend and oral history.

Devised with suggestions and advice from teachers and advisors in the county, Tregeagle aimed to give a full and satisfying theatrical experience, whilst firmly basing the work in areas of the curriculum. This allowed teachers if they wanted to use the Company's performance as a teaching resource to re-inforce or begin a scheme of work.

Tregeagle had a simple staging using a small circle with simple props and homemade masks worn by a cast who played roles including demons, saints, a pig farmer and hermit. This production sees a fusion of three legends culminating in the howling of Tregeagle's tormented spirit as he plunged across the stage to empty the perforated limpet shell, chased by the minions of the Black Hunter.

This production was a precursor to a main production for a different audience to be performed in the autumn of this year.
